  • Default Signing Format: Choose a default signing format based on PKCS#7 or CAdES standard. PKCS #7 - Detached is selected by default.
  • Appearance Styles: Manage the signature appearance templates.
  • Signing & Verifications
  1. Sign the document immediately after the signature is placed: Check this option to sign the document immediately when you place the signature on the document. By default, this option is checked. When it is unchecked, you will need to click Sign Document to apply the signature after placing it on the document. You can still modify the document before applying the signature.
  2. Control how and when signatures are verified: click Change Settings to choose options.
  • Verify signatures when the document is opened: If this option is checked, Foxit PDF Editor will verify the signatures when the document is opened, and will display the signature verification results in the Digital Signatures panel. By default, the option is checked.
  • When document has valid but untrusted signatures, prompt to review and trust signers: With the option selected, if the signature (not including certified signatures) is verified as valid but is applied by an untrusted signer with a certificate that doesn’t chain up to a trust anchor, a message box appears in the top-right corner of the application window to inform you the document includes signatures from signers that you haven’t trusted yet. You can click Manage Trust in the message box to trust the signer. More information, please refer to Trusted Certificates. To make sure that the notification message is displayed successfully, please check the Show the message which affects the next step option in the preferences about Notification Messages.
  • Verification Behavior
    • Require certificate revocation checking to succeed whenever possible during signature verification: Specify whether or not to check the revocation status of certificates while verifying signatures.
    • Use expired timestamps: Uses the secure time provided by the document timestamp or the timestamp embedded in the signature, even if the timestamp’s certificate has expired. The option is selected by default. With the option unselected, the time provided by the expired timestamps will be discarded and the verification time will be the time at which signature was applied or the current time in the system based on your setting on Verification Time.
    • Ignore document validation information: Specify whether to ignore the related certificate revocation information embedded in the document when validating signatures.

For flexible and convenient management of plugins, Foxit PDF Editor offers a Plug-in Management Platform, in which you can view the plug-in status, learn the information about the plugins installed, as well as manage the plug-ins as needed.

To open the Plug-in Management Platform, please choose Help > Plug-in Management.

Plug-in Status

Foxit PDF Editor lists the plug-ins that have been installed in the About Plug-in Management window. Some plug-ins will be loaded the first time you use the related features. When the plug-in is successfully loaded, a checkmark will be displayed in the Loaded column. You can view the plug-in status in the following two columns:

  • Certified: Shows whether the signature of the plug-in is valid or not.
  • Loaded: Shows whether the plug-in has been loaded successfully or not.

Note: Some plug-ins are not loaded immediately (i.e. in the standby status with shown in the Certified and Loaded columns). These plug-ins will be loaded and certified after you use the related features.

Plug-in Information

In addition to plug-in status, you can learn more information about the plug-in installed, including the name, date, description and legal copyright.

To learn the details of a plug-in, please click More… under the general description of the plug-in in the Plug-in Management Platform.

Plug-in Management

With the Plug-in Management Platform, you can manage the plug-ins as needed, including installing, enabling, disabling and uninstalling plug-ins.

Installing a Plug-in

Foxit PDF Editor allows you to install a plug-in in FZIP format. You can also install one or more plug-ins by using an XML file. An XML file defines the information about plug-ins to be installed, and should be used together with .fpi files. (Tip: For a plug-in in MSI format, double-click it to install it.)

  • Select Help > Plug-in Management to open the Plug-in Management Platform.
  • Click Install Plugin in the About Plug-in Management dialog box.
  • In the Open dialog box, do one of the following:
    • To install a plug-in in FZIP format, select FZIP Files (*.fzip) from the file type drop-down list beside the File name box, choose the file from your local disk, and click Open. When the installation completes, click OK.
    • To install one or more plug-ins by using an XML file, select Plug-in File (*.xml) from the file type drop-down list, choose the XML file from your local disk, and click Open. Then Foxit PDF Editor will verify whether the signature of the plug-in is valid or not. If it is valid, Foxit PDF Editor will load the plug-in. Otherwise, the installation will be terminated.

Tip: If you install plug-ins by using an XML file, please place the .xml file and .fpi files in the same folder to avoid an installation failure.
